Coping with Grief During the Holidays

As the holidays are upon us, it is important to know how to deal with grief during this time.    Here are a few key tips to keep in mind:

  1. Be honest and communicate with others what you want to do and what you do not want to do.
  2. Do something special in honor of your loved one such as planting a tree, giving a donation, adopting a family, etc.
  3. Decide where you want to spend the holidays and with who.
  4. Surround yourself with people you enjoy being around.
  5. Plan ahead
  6. Decide what traditions you want to keep and which ones you want to stay away from.
  7. Possibly create a new tradition in memory of your loved one.
  8. Remember that people grieve differently.
  9. See a counselor or join a support group.
  10. Do not feel guilty if you are enjoying yourself.
